Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding

The Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding (Panda Base for short hereunder) is established in March of 1987, which occupies nearly 1,333,340 square meters. The purpose is that, by taking advantages of the “Panda’s Hometown” geographical advantage of Chengdu, and the technology and talents superiority of Chengdu zoo rescue, captive breeding and research on pandas after the liberation, to develop the giant panda ex-situ conservation, and through scientific and technology research to enhance the artificial propagation of the panda so as to increase the population quantity of the pandas; when the population quantity increased to a certain degree, to carry out the giant panda wild training so as to realization of release the giant pandas to the wild to complement and rejuvenate the wild giant panda population.

Under the care and support of leaders of the nation, province and city, through 20 years’ development, the Panda Base has become one of the main study bases for Chinese government implementing the ex-situ conservation project of endangered wildlife such as giant pandas etc, it is also our nation’s even the world’s famous rare and endangered wildlife research institute of giant pandas etc, which is integrated with giant panda scientific research and breeding, protection education, educational tourism and giant panda culture construction.
